Thanks Eureka,

There are times when disaster strikes at the worst possible times of our lives. These times can be at the highest point of our life or at the lowest. At either point it is always an unwelcome event and it can leave you with a feeling of desolation and emptiness. (And even though these feelings might be the same thing, they both suck.) Without a direction to turn or a familiar face to confide in things can get pretty grim…..

I had started a solo sea kayak paddle around the United States coastline. I started from the upper Northwest in July and have been paddling ever since then.

I have been paddling with hopes of sharing my experiences as well as learning new ones from the people I will meet along the way.

Upon a stop in Eureka, California, to do a news article with the  Times Standard, I had to stay in a hotel and leave my kayak on the beach. The kayak is not worth much to anybody, unless they were doing what I was doing. So I figured it would be safe. I awoke the next morning to find it had been stolen. This brought on a series of emotions that I described above and started to realize the implications of this situation.

I had basically been living out of this kayak for a month and a half, so you could sort of see where I was at.

But that is not what I want to write about. What I need to express is the fact that something unfortunate happened to someone on a journey, and a whole city came together to rectify this incident. They helped to get the Sea America Expedition and all its intentions back up and running again.

So with the support of the Sea American Expedition team, Urban Eskimo kayaking, the people of Eureka and American Oceans Campaign, I'm back on the water. I hope we all realize that just as we all came together to get me back up and running, collaboration and unity will also help us keep the future of our oceans and coastlines safe for the future of humanity.

Thanks Mike.
